AWAKENING

AWAKENING

Was it the sound of the bird on the branch that woke us?

Or the scent spreading from the flowers?

Who were the ones that woke before us,

Put on their clothes and began to work?

The flying butterflies, bees, insects, birds…

The ants, squirrels, flowers, seeds.

No one seems tired from yesterday.

Who are these, fresher than the day before,

More alive, more eager than us?

Who was it that started the movement first?

That seed, cracking

Moving toward its next phase with vivid steps,

On its way to becoming a plant,

Cracked in the middle from the struggle

And its power comes from this very thing:

Not giving up despite hardship,

A two-gram sprout,

That pierces the soil and shatters the stone…

That caterpillar did not give up either

Not while weaving its cocoon,

Nor while breaking out of it.

Though it could barely breathe,

Again and again it kept trying.

And when it finally flew, its joy came from this:

From not giving up despite hardship.

A bee colony builds its hive

Don’t they get tired, visiting two thousand flowers a day?

Yet they don’t give up.

And its abundance comes from this

Though all the honey it makes in a lifetime

Is half a teaspoon,

It is not the amount of honey that is honored,

But the sweat behind it,

The one that gives a hundred units of healing

For every single unit of honey.

Who are these?

Fresher than the day before,

More alive, more eager, stronger?

Who began this motion first?

If you wonder, how they are so alive?

The answer in the previous scene:

Every living thing becomes alive through exhaustion.

If you wonder, how they are so abundant?

The answer in the previous scene:

They don’t stop at hardship,

But keep going despite it.

If you wonder, how they are so joyful?

The answer in the previous scene:

That joy belongs to those

Who trade comfort for contribution.

On earth,

Every awakening has its own quality,

And that quality always has a cause…
